Fillinger Point

An easy shore dive with lots of macro critters

Fillinger Point – Dive Site Overview

Fillinger Point (Fillinger Waterfront Park #1) is a small, easy-access shore dive in north Nanaimo that has become a favourite for newer divers, macro photographers, and anyone who loves slow, methodical exploration. The site is shallow, calm, and simple to navigate, making it an excellent choice for practice dives, night dives, or casual outings when you want guaranteed critter encounters without a long swim.

Though the profile is gentle, Fillinger Point consistently delivers great marine life, especially in the winter months.  From the parking area, follow the path down to the left to reach the shoreline.

The entry is usually straightforward, with only a short walk over the beach before dropping into the water.

Underwater, you’ll encounter:

    • A shallow ledge or "mini wall" just a few minutes from shore
    • A sandy bottom with scattered boulders and rock clusters
    • Small pockets of reef that are perfect for hunting macro life
    • Protected conditions suitable for new divers and night diving

This is one of Nanaimo’s most reliable sites for spotting small, fascinating species. Common sightings include:

    • Ruby octopus
    • Stubby squid
    • Giant Pacific octopus (juveniles and the occasional adult)
    • Cockerell’s nudibranchs
    • Clown nudibranchs
    • A variety of sculpins and other macro subjects

Because of the modest depth, it’s a forgiving dive site that encourages slow exploration and careful observation.

Fillinger Point Dive profile overview

Most divers simply head straight out from the entry. You’ll descend over a small wall and land on a sandy seabed dotted with rocks, kelp fronds, and low-relief structure.

Typical highlights include:

    • Searching the cracks of the shallow wall for octopus dens
    • Cruising the sandy flats for stubby squid
    • Inspecting boulders for nudibranch clusters
    • Night dives where macro life is especially active

There are no significant hazards, currents, or navigation challenges. Most return along the same route and finish in the shallows, which are often full of algae, eelgrass, and small fish hiding among the stones.
