SDI Advanced Buoyancy

Improve your trim, control, and efficiency in Nanaimo’s cold-water conditions

SDI Advanced Buoyancy Diver Certification in Nanaimo

Master your buoyancy and transform every dive you make

The SDI Advanced Buoyancy Diver course is one of the most valuable specialties a diver can take. When you control your buoyancy, you control your dive. This course helps you fine-tune your body position, improve efficiency, reduce gas consumption, and move through the water with confidence.

Training with Nanaimo Dive Outfitters lets you refine these skills in both pool and ocean environments around Vancouver Island. Improved buoyancy means safer ascents, steadier safety stops, cleaner kicks, and a more enjoyable experience on every future dive.

Who is the Advanced Buoyancy Diver course for?

This course is ideal for certified divers who want to:

    • Improve body position and horizontal trim
    • Reduce gas usage and increase comfort
    • Become more stable during ascents and safety stops
    • Refine control for photography, conservation, and advanced diving
    • Prepare for more advanced SDI and TDI training

Minimum age is 18, or 10–17 with parental consent depending on agency standards. Students must be certified Open Water divers or equivalent.

What to expect in your Advanced Buoyancy course

This specialty is offered year-round and can be completed entirely in a pool, in open water, or a combination of both.

A typical training session includes:

    • Pre-class theory and buoyancy review
    • Weighting assessment and trim evaluation
    • Confined water skill development
    • Optional open-water dives for real-world practice

You will receive direct coaching from your instructor and plenty of time to refine positioning, finning, and breathing control.

What you’ll learn in your Advanced Buoyancy course

The Advanced Buoyancy Diver course has three main phases:

#1. Knowledge development

Complete your SDI eLearning at home before class. You’ll learn:

    • How proper trim reduces effort and improves gas efficiency
    • How weighting placement affects control and body position
    • How buoyancy, breathing, and propulsion work together
    • How equipment configuration impacts streamlining and stability

#2. In-water training

In the water, you’ll learn and practice:

    • Holding a perfectly horizontal trim position
    • Using the minimum weight needed for neutral buoyancy
    • Finning techniques that reduce drag and prevent silt disturbance
    • Slow, controlled ascents and stable safety stops
    • Adjusting your equipment setup for better balance and control

You’ll have focused time with your instructor to fine-tune your buoyancy and develop dependable underwater control.

#3. Optional open-water dives

If you complete the course in open water, you may train at local Nanaimo sites such as:

Here you’ll apply your trim and buoyancy techniques in real conditions while working around cold-water marine life and varied terrain.

Your gear you will use in the Advanced Buoyancy Diver course

All required scuba gear is available for rent through Nanaimo Dive Outfitters. For this course you will use:

    • Mask, snorkel, fins
    • BCD and regulator
    • Dive computer
    • Cylinder and weight system
    • Drysuit and thermal undergarments

All Advanced Buoyancy training is completed in a drysuit. With local waters sitting around 8°C to 10°C year-round, a drysuit provides the warmth and stability you need to focus on trim and buoyancy control. You’ll learn how your drysuit and BCD work together, how to manage small air shifts, and how proper weighting supports a balanced, horizontal position. Our team will ensure your drysuit fits properly so you can train comfortably and confidently.

Perfecting your buoyancy builds confidence

Perfecting your buoyancy in British Columbia builds a solid foundation for diving anywhere. Once you can hold trim, maintain depth, and move efficiently in cold water, warm-water diving becomes even easier. These skills benefit every certification you pursue later, from deep and wreck diving to underwater photography.
